Ok, so this is just a little thread to help clear up those grammar beasties that - admit it - we all make from time to time. Hopefully this will help people improve their quality of writing in their role plays and just generally save me time (yes, I go through posts and edit their grammar, because I'm a freak like that. ;D)
So! Let's begin.
Same sound, different spelling!
Your or You're?
This is one that pops up the most, and sometimes it's easy just to forget, but no harm in checking! So what's the difference?
Your
Examples: This is your book.
: It's not mine, it's yours!
: Oh sorry, I forgot it was not yours.
This word is used when something belongs to someone.
You're aka You ARE
Examples: You know what? You're really starting to annoy me with your poor grammar!
: Oh pardon me, I did not realise that you're such a perfectionist!
: You're forgiven.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Its VS It's
Oh these are so easy, but also so easy to mess up!
It's aka It IS or HAS
Examples: It's nice to see you old chap!
: Blimey, it's been so long!
So just like 'you're', 'it's' is two words squished together.
Its
Examples: I have a dog. Its name is Bob.
: Really? Why is its name Bob?
: 'Cos it is its name, that's why.
So just like 'your', 'its' is used when something belongs to something or someone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tenses
We would prefer it if you wrote your posts in the past tense.
If you like writing in the present tense we don't mind, but past tense is preferable.
For the love of cheese, do NOT mix tense. Your character cannot be doing something in the past and the present at the same time. Unless they're Dr Who, which they're not, and even then that would be a paradox. Just don't mix tenses
