It was midnight, and the young pup Seirei couldn't sleep. Scrambling out of his bed, which was actually an oversized pillow for he was so small, he padded over to the dresser on the other side of his room and pulled out a gift from his mother: a gold plated music box, engraved with his initials. Flicking the latch open, he rushed back to bed and snuggled under the covers, letting the twinkling melody fill his ears. It was the tune to the lullaby his mother often sang to him, and he heard the words inside his head as the music played:
The birds grow still As the moon rises high, The stars look down, As we say goodnight.
Lay down your sweet head And close your eyes. Spread your wings, fly away, To the infinite skies.
At the centre of the music box a miniature gold, winged wolf rotating slowly, reflecting and refracting the tiny blue lights that twinkled on the inner lid, lighting up Seirei's eyes and projecting the stars onto his blanket. He yawned, feeling his eyelids grow heavy as he watched the miniature wolf circle round and round. He soon dozed off, the box still held close to his chest, and floating away into his dreams as the lullaby played on ...The Hisakata Lullaby melody and lyrics were composed by me and may not be used without permission.
