The young prince had alway found his duties difficult to accept.
His father had left a legacy behind him of peace and security, and the Hisakata clan had never been so strong and content. But like all eras, the head of the clan's life soon came to an unexpected end. The young Prince Seirei mourned deeply for his father's death. He was not ready. He did not want to take his father's place. That would mean that his father was really gone, and he was not willing to accept that.
Various attempts at persuasion ensued from advisors, friends and even strangers. He was the only heir they had said. No other was more worthy to lead the clan. The prince remained adamant: he would not sit on that throne, but a challenge came that changed the history of the Hisakatas forever.
Kurai, the elder brother of Seirei, who had been exiled from the clan many years beforehand, was considered an outcast by the family. His right to the throne had been revoked by his father after the power of Kurai's desire to overthrow the order of succession had become a threat. He was therefore sent to the other side of the land of Yoru for a lifetime of reflection.
Three months had passed since the Head's death, and Seirei remained in deeply ingrained depression. A temporary council was forced to be formed, containing the Head's closest and wisest advisors, when the clan realised that their new leader was unwilling. Kurai arrived on a dark, wet night, his face twisted with malice and hatred, eyes sharp and twinkling cruelly. They were the eyes of one who had gone insane with isolation. He burst into the council chamber that lay underneath the great hall of the palace and savagely attacked the advisors one after the other. Only one advisor managed to survive: Seirei's tutor, who had always seemed like an uncle to him, his father too busy with his duties to care for the sentimentalities of his son. The tutor had hid under the table as soon as Kurai had entered the chamber, and had snuck out when the murderer's back was turned, running straight to Seirei's chambers.
Kurai had indeed come back to claim his right to the Headship. Motivated by Seirei's need for vengeance for the death of his father's friends, great feuds broke out across the land, between those who supported the young prince, and those who supported or were forced to join the ranks of the exile. The fighting lasted for two years, over which time Seirei grew in strength and wisdom as a fighter and leader and it soon became clear to all that his destiny was well deserved. With a surge of enthusiastic support, Seirei finally overthrew his brother in a bloody battle between the two. When it came to the matter of ending his opponent's life, Seirei couldn't. He was not his brother. He would not destroy life. He resorted to banishing the weak and limping Kurai to a life of banishment.
However, his defeated brother did not remain in hiding for long. Not six months after the end of the great battle, his brother returned with not warriors, but lies, that were secretly spread to the rest of the clan, stating that it had been Seirei who had murdered his father. In fear of the entire land turning on him, Seirei fled from his home in shame, unable to persuade anyone that he was innocent, leaving behind his tutor, his friends and the faith of the people behind him. He vowed to himself that he would never forgive his brother and would one day return to his home land and fight for his rightful place as leader of the Hisakata Clan.
