This is a tough one. There are two cylinders. one is made of gold and is hollow, the other is made of a poor quality material. they are both painted and you are not allowed to scratch it off. They weigh the same and are the same size and shape. How do you tell which one is the gold?

Gold is soft, and you can bend it?

Tap one of them and see which makes the hollow sound?

Nope, neither work. Gold isn't soft enough to bend by hand, and the gold is soft, so it would absorb most of the sound, making it sound... not hollow.

does the gold cylinder have a hole through it?

No. This is tough and deals with physics.

drop them in water to see which floats?

Nice try, but no, the gold would outweigh any air in it. The other would just sink. Think about how one is hollow and the distrubution of mass.

is it something to do with if you placed them on something, the non-gold would leave a full circle, while the gold would leave a circular line? i dunno

You roll them. the gold is hollow so all the mass is farther outside, making it roll farther.
